Medieval street maze
The old town's crooked, narrow lanes rarely meet at right angles. Together they form a knotted core that contrasts sharply with the straighter streets of the later town.

El mapa
Tábor was founded in 1420 by the Hussites. They chose a spur of high ground above the Lužnice River for their new community and named it after the biblical Mount Tabor. The old town still occupies that promontory, bordered by the river's deep valley on one side and water on another, and the map shows the natural defences that made the site attractive.
The historic streets are famously irregular. Lanes twist, fork and dead-end instead of forming a grid, a layout often explained as a way to confuse attackers. At the centre they open into Žižka Square, named after the Hussite commander Jan Žižka. Beyond the old core, the modern town spreads out in a more conventional pattern of blocks and housing estates.
Just north of the old town lies the Jordán reservoir, dammed in the late fifteenth century and among the oldest artificial lakes in Central Europe. A Tábor map poster sets its smooth outline against the knotted medieval streets and the winding Lužnice. The result is one of the more distinctive town plans in Bohemia.
The old town's crooked, narrow lanes rarely meet at right angles. Together they form a knotted core that contrasts sharply with the straighter streets of the later town.
Created in 1492, this historic pond sits beside the old town as a large, smooth shape. It is one of the oldest reservoirs in Central Europe and a strong element on the map.
The river loops below the old town's southern and western edges in a steep valley. The curved boundary it draws explains why the Hussites fortified this particular hill.

Por qué Tábor
Tábor is a map with a story, because the tangle of the old town is a direct record of the fifteenth century. It appeals to readers of history, to former students and residents, and to anyone who has walked those lanes and got lost as intended.
The title and subtitle can become a family name, an anniversary or a Czech phrase, and the coordinates line can be kept or rewritten. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, then order the HD files for $9 or a matte print from a print partner.
