El mapa
Tatsuno lies in the Harima area of Hyōgo Prefecture, where the Ibo River runs south toward the Seto Inland Sea. The old town sits on the river's west bank at the foot of a wooded hill, and on the map it appears as a small, orderly pattern of lanes that grew up below Tatsuno Castle. Newer districts spread across the flatter land to the south and east.
The town is often called the little Kyoto of Harima for its preserved streets of merchant houses and storehouses. It is also the home of usukuchi, the light-coloured soy sauce used widely in Kansai cooking, and breweries still operate here. The poet Miki Rofu, who wrote the lyrics of the song Akatombo, was born in Tatsuno.
A Tatsuno map poster shows how the river, the castle hill and the old town fit together in a single frame. The contrast between the dense historic quarter, the broad water of the Ibo and the empty wooded slopes makes the print calm and legible. It suits anyone who knows the town or loves the quieter corners of western Japan.
Below the castle hill, the old quarter is laid out in short, regular blocks, a pattern typical of Japanese castle towns and clearly visible in black and white.
The river runs north to south through the city, a wide pale band that separates the historic quarter from the districts on the opposite bank.
Forested slopes rise immediately behind the old town, leaving large open areas on the map that frame the streets and emphasise their small, human scale.
