El mapa
Tavda sits in the far east of Sverdlovsk Oblast, beyond the Urals on the West Siberian Plain, on the river of the same name. The Tavda River loops across the landscape in wide meanders, and the town lies along its bank, with forest stretching away on all sides in what is mostly flat, swampy taiga.
The town grew as a centre of the timber industry after a railway reached it in the early Soviet period, linking the forests to the Urals. Sawmills and wood-processing plants shaped its economy, and wooden houses remain common in many of its neighbourhoods.
A Tavda map poster shows a settlement defined by river, rail and forest. The streets form a rough grid near the centre, the railway approaches from the west, and the river curls around one side of town. Beyond the last houses, the map simply opens into wide, quiet space.
The river winds in broad meanders past the town, a strong curving line that frames the streets and dominates one side of the composition.
The rail line arrives from the direction of the Urals, the link that allowed the town's timber industry to grow and a long straight stroke on the map.
Forest surrounds the settlement, so the built-up area appears as a compact cluster of streets set within a wide, open margin.
