Tongjing lies in the hilly country north of central Chongqing. This is a landscape of ridges, terraced slopes and rivers that cut deep channels through the rock. The town has grown along the valley where the ground allows, so its streets bend and branch in response to the terrain rather than following a regular grid.
The area is known in the region for its hot springs, which have made it a destination for visitors from the city. On the map, the built-up area is mostly compact and linear. It is squeezed between hillsides, while roads climb out in switchbacks toward villages and farmland on the ridges. Green, empty space dominates everything beyond the valley.
