El mapa
Tsuruda lies in the north of Kagoshima Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, in a landscape of forested hills and river valleys. It is now part of the town of Satsuma. On the map the most important feature is the Sendai River, which winds through the area in broad curves, with settlements and farmland lining its banks.
The Tsuruda Dam, on the Sendai River, is one of the largest dams in Kyushu. The reservoir behind it adds a long, branching body of water to the map, reaching into side valleys between the hills. Roads follow the river and valley floors, and smaller lanes climb toward hillside farms and forest.
A Tsuruda map poster is shaped mostly by water and landform. The design shows a place where people live along the river corridor and wooded slopes fill the rest of the frame. It is calm and very different from a city map.
The river loops through the valley in wide bends. It is the backbone of the map and sets where roads, fields and villages sit.
The reservoir spreads into several side valleys and forms an irregular, finger-like body of water. It is the most distinctive shape in the frame.
Small clusters of homes and fields line the valley floors. They appear as quiet groupings of lines set against wide wooded hills.
