The Aura River
The river cuts diagonally through the centre, crossed by a sequence of bridges, and gives the poster a strong line from the inland districts to the harbour.

Turku Map Poster & Print
Turku grew up on both banks of the Aura River a few kilometres before it reaches the Archipelago Sea, and the river remains the organising line of the whole map. The city served as the country's capital until 1812, when the seat of government moved to Helsinki, and its medieval cathedral still stands beside the old market square on the eastern bank.
In 1827 a great fire destroyed most of the town, and the rebuilt city followed a new grid plan by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel. That plan explains the map: long straight streets running parallel and perpendicular to the river, wide tree-lined streets intended as firebreaks, and regular blocks that give central Turku an unusually calm, even rhythm.
Downstream, the river passes Turku Castle and the harbour, where ferries leave for Stockholm and the Åland Islands, and the land breaks into islands such as Ruissalo. A Turku map poster shows the grid, the river and that fraying coastline together, with the small Föri ferry that has crossed the Aura for more than a century.

Engel's grid
After the fire of 1827 the centre was replanned on a regular grid with wide tree-lined streets, still clearly visible as evenly spaced blocks on both banks.
Castle and archipelago
At the river mouth the castle, harbour and ferry terminals sit beside open water, and islands like Ruissalo begin the long scatter of the Archipelago Sea.

Por qué Turku
Un mapa con significado
Turku has a long academic life, with the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi drawing students from across the country, and a map of the river and grid is a natural keepsake from those years. It also suits anyone with family in the city or summers spent in the archipelago.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the Swedish name Åbo alongside the Finnish, and edit the coordinates line. Five styles are available, Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and the $9 download includes six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and PDF.
