Uglich lies on the upper Volga in Yaroslavl Oblast and is one of the historic towns on the Golden Ring route. The river is central to its map. It widens into the Uglich reservoir upstream, passes through a dam and a lock, and flows past the town. The kremlin sits on the riverbank at the heart of the old town.
Around the kremlin, the streets are laid out in a partly regular plan, typical of older Russian provincial towns. Churches and monasteries are scattered through the centre. Towards the edges, the grid loosens into lower-density housing and gardens. The dam, the lock and the hydroelectric station form a clear piece of engineering at the edge of the historic core.
An Uglich map poster brings together the town's two histories: the medieval kremlin and the twentieth-century river works. Uglich is best known as the place where Tsarevich Dmitry, son of Ivan the Terrible, died in 1591. The Church of St Dmitry on the Blood stands in the kremlin in his memory.

The hydroelectric dam and shipping lock cross the Volga near the centre. Their straight lines contrast with the curve of the river.
