El mapa
Valuyki was founded in 1593 as a fortress on the southern frontier of the Muscovite state, guarding the approaches from the steppe. It stands where the small Valuy River flows into the Oskol, and the meeting of the two valleys still defines its layout: the older centre on raised ground near the confluence, and newer districts spreading along the river terraces.
The Oskol runs broad and meandering through a green floodplain, with side channels and oxbows that give parts of the map loose, organic lines. By contrast the town streets form a fairly regular grid, crossed by the railway that has made Valuyki an important junction in the region.
The town lies close to the border with Ukraine, in chalk country where pale slopes rise above the rivers. A Valuyki map poster shows how a settlement born as a guard post has grown into a quiet district centre, its shape still tied to the water that once made the site defensible.
The Valuy joins the Oskol near the historic core, a meeting of two river lines that explains where the fortress was placed four centuries ago.
A wide, low valley of meanders, side channels and small lakes, drawn in soft curves that balance the more regular streets.
Tracks and yards cross the town in long straight strokes, a reminder that Valuyki grew as a rail hub as well as a river town.
