Van Map Poster
Van sits at around 1,700 metres on the eastern side of Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey. It is a highly alkaline soda lake with no outlet to the sea. The modern city lies a few kilometres inland from the shore, laid out in broad blocks and long avenues, and the flat expanse of the lake fills the western side of any wider map.
Between the city and the water stands the Rock of Van, a long limestone ridge crowned by the fortress of Tushpa, capital of the Urartian kingdom nearly three thousand years ago. The old walled town at its foot was destroyed during the First World War, and the present city grew further east. That history explains the open ground between the rock and the modern streets.
A Van map poster shows that unusual arrangement clearly: a planned grid, a solitary rock, then the shoreline and a vast lake. To the east, higher ground rises toward Mount Erek. The city is also known for the Van cat, a white breed that often has eyes of two different colours, and locals are happy to mention it.

Rock of Van
The narrow fortress ridge lies between the modern city and the lake, a solitary landmark surrounded by open ground where the old town once stood.
Modern grid
East of the rock, the present-day city spreads in broad, regular blocks along wide avenues, a clearly planned pattern that contrasts with the irregular shoreline.

Por qué Van
Un mapa con significado
Van means something particular to the people who come from it, and to anyone who has stood on the fortress looking across the lake. On a wall the poster reads as both a city map and a landscape, and the water gives it an unusual calm and scale.
You can write your own title and subtitle, from a family name to the year you left or returned, and keep the coordinates as a quiet final line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand to suit the room.
