El mapa
Welkom was founded in 1947 in the Free State goldfields, laid out from scratch after gold was found beneath the surrounding farmland. Its plan owes much to the garden city movement: instead of a rigid grid, the town is organised around curving avenues, generous green belts and residential neighbourhoods that curl inward away from the main roads. From above it looks deliberate and almost diagrammatic.
The town is often called the Circle City because traffic in the centre moves through roundabouts rather than signals, and those circles appear on the map as a chain of clean rings. Around the edges, the pattern gives way to mine shafts, tailings and the flat, open Highveld landscape, with Virginia and Odendaalsrus nearby in the same goldfield.
Water pumped from the mines collected in several pans around Welkom, and these shallow lakes became known for flocks of flamingos and other birds. On a Welkom map poster, the pans sit as soft irregular shapes beside the tidy geometry of the planned town, a reminder of how closely the city's layout is tied to what lies underground.
The central roads meet at a series of roundabouts, giving Welkom its nickname and producing one of the most recognisable patterns of rings and radiating streets in South Africa.
Residential areas are laid out as curving crescents and closes around green spaces, a planned, inward-looking pattern that contrasts sharply with the straight roads connecting the town to the mines.
Shallow pans around the town, fed partly by water from mining, appear as open irregular shapes on the map and are known for flamingos and other water birds.
