West Fargo lies on the western edge of the Fargo metro area, in the flat country of the Red River Valley. The map is dominated by straight lines: section roads laid out on the survey grid, long residential streets and wide arterials running cleanly across the prairie.
The Sheyenne River winds through the city, and a flood diversion channel runs nearby, a reminder that water management shapes life in this very flat valley. Interstate 94 passes to the south, and new neighbourhoods keep extending the grid outward into former farmland, making West Fargo one of the fastest-growing cities in North Dakota.
