West Lafayette sits on the west bank of the Wabash River in Indiana, facing the older city of Lafayette across the water. It is defined by Purdue University, whose campus covers much of the city's centre and whose students make up a large share of the population. Bridges link the two sides of the river, and State Street runs from the riverfront up through the heart of campus.
From above, the university stands out clearly. Academic buildings are arranged around quads and malls, with wide paths crossing between them, while residential streets form a more regular grid to the north and west. The Purdue airport sits at the southern edge of campus, and farmland starts not far beyond the city limits, a reminder of the university's roots in agriculture.
