El mapa
Wuhai sits where the Yellow River runs north through western Inner Mongolia, squeezed between the Ordos plateau and the ridges that lead toward the Helan Mountains. On a map the city reads as several separate settlements rather than one: districts spread along the river and the foothills, joined by long straight roads across open, empty ground. Few streets here meander; most are laid out in broad rectangular blocks.
The most striking feature is water. A water-control dam on the river created Wuhai Lake, a long reservoir that now lies between the districts on either bank. Around it the terrain turns to sand and bare rock, which a black-and-white rendering shows as wide blank space, so the streets appear as tight islands of pattern set in the middle of a desert landscape.
The city grew on coal from the mid-twentieth century onward, and its districts still sit close to the mining areas that shaped them. It has also cultivated a reputation for calligraphy, promoting itself as a centre of the art. A Wuhai map poster captures this unusual pairing of industry and quiet water: a town that is strict in plan yet surrounded by country with almost no lines at all.

Haibowan, Hainan and Wuda form distinct clusters rather than one continuous city, so the map shows several grids linked by highways across open ground.
Sand and bare hills close in from east and west, leaving large empty areas on the poster that frame the built-up land and the river corridor.

Por qué Wuhai
People who worked in the mines or grew up by the lake often want Wuhai on the wall because its outline is so particular: a few dense grids floating in empty country. It is a map that looks almost abstract, yet anyone from the city recognises it immediately.
You can change the title, subtitle and coordinates line, adding a family name or the year you left. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Sand in particular suits the desert setting. Download HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
