Xiazhen is the county seat of Weishan County in southern Shandong. It sits on the eastern side of the Nansi Lake system, a chain of connected shallow lakes. From above, the town is mostly a straight grid of modern roads. To the west, the orderly blocks give way to the water, marshes and channels of the lake edge.
The Nansi lakes are among the largest freshwater lakes in northern China, and the Grand Canal route passes through the area. Fishing, reed harvesting and lotus have long been part of life here. On the map, the lake edge is complex, with embankments, fish ponds and channels. It contrasts with the regular streets of the town centre.
