Yanwo lies in the west of Chongqing municipality, a region of low, rounded hills and cultivated valleys between the larger towns of the Sichuan Basin. The map is quiet and rural. The town is a small, dense cluster of streets, and around it the land is divided into fields, ponds and small wooded patches on the slopes.
Towns in this part of Chongqing usually grew along one main street or at a road junction, and they spread only as far as the terrain allowed. From above, the streets form a tight knot, and the roads that leave it curve across the countryside following the shape of the hills. Ponds and reservoirs, common in this farming landscape, appear as small scattered shapes among the fields.
