Yŏch’im-dong lies in Chagang Province, a heavily mountainous region of North Korea that borders China. In terrain like this, towns follow the valleys: from above, streets and buildings form a narrow, elongated pattern along the lower ground, with slopes rising steeply on either side. The outline is shaped almost entirely by the land rather than by any plan imposed on it.
Little detailed public information about the town is available, and the map often says more than any written description. Chagang is known for its forests and rivers, and much of the province is thinly populated, with towns strung along the river valleys and the roads and rail lines that follow them.
