Yŏnmu, usually written Yeonmu, is a town in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, on the broad plains south of Daejeon. On a map the town centre is a compact cluster of short streets and low-rise blocks, surrounded by rice paddies and greenhouses laid out in neat rectangles. Wooded hills appear toward the edges of the frame, and streams wind through the farmland.
The town is known across the country as the home of the Korea Army Training Center, where a large share of South Korea's conscripts begin their military service. For many families the name Yeonmu is tied to an emotional farewell at the training centre gates. The town's shops and restaurants have long served visiting parents and new recruits.
