Zanjan lies in north-western Iran, in a high valley on the Zanjanrud River. It has long been a stop on the route between Tehran and Tabriz. From above, the city stretches along the valley, with the river and main roads running roughly east to west. The older centre has a denser and more irregular pattern, and newer districts spread out in more regular blocks toward the edges.
The city is known for its crafts, especially knives and malileh, a fine silver filigree work. Among its historic buildings are the old bazaar and the Rakhtshor-khaneh, a former public laundry house now used as a museum. A short drive to the south-east, the great dome of Soltaniyeh, a UNESCO World Heritage site, rises from the plain.
