El mapa
Zuitai lies in the mountainous south of Gansu, in the Longnan region near the borders with Shaanxi and Sichuan. This is a different Gansu from the deserts and grasslands further north: steep wooded ridges, deep valleys and small towns that grew wherever the ground was flat enough to build on. On a map the settlement reads as a long, compact shape pressed between the hillsides.
Because space is limited, the street pattern follows the terrain rather than a plan. Main roads run lengthwise along the valley, side streets climb a short way before they meet the slopes, and the edges of town are set by the contours rather than by ring roads. That gives the drawing a strong sense of direction, almost like a line of handwriting across the paper.
Few international guidebooks mention the town, and that is why a Zuitai map poster can mean so much to the people who know it. It records a real place in outline and shows how it fits into its valley. It needs no famous landmarks to be recognisable to someone who grew up, worked or studied there.
The town stretches along the flat bottom of its valley, so the built-up area appears as a narrow band, with roads running parallel to the direction of the land.
Where the streets stop, the slopes begin. The map shows this as a sudden change from dense lines to open space, a clean frame on either side of town.
A few routes thread out through the surrounding valleys toward neighbouring settlements. They are drawn as thin curving lines that follow the shape of the ground.
