Białystok is the largest city in north-eastern Poland and the capital of the Podlaskie region. The small Biała river crosses the centre, and much of its course is followed by parks and green corridors. On a map the city reads as a dense historic core surrounded by broad avenues, housing estates and unusually large areas of greenery and forest.
At the heart of the city stands the Branicki Palace, a baroque residence with formal gardens, often called the Versailles of Podlasie.
