Rancho Palos Verdes covers much of the southern side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, which rises from the Los Angeles basin into the Pacific. It has almost no street grid. Roads curve along ridgelines and canyon edges, and cul-de-sacs branch off them like leaves. Along the southern edge, Palos Verdes Drive traces the coastline above the cliffs.
The coast includes the Point Vicente Lighthouse and the Wayfarers Chapel, a glass church designed by Lloyd Wright. It also includes the Portuguese Bend area, where the land has been slowly sliding toward the sea for decades. The movement has repeatedly damaged the roads that cross it and made the area one of California's best-known active landslides.
