Vyanda lies in Bururi Province, in the highlands of southern Burundi, a region of steep hills and deep valleys between the shore of Lake Tanganyika and the central plateau. The land rarely lies flat here, and from above the settlement pattern follows the relief: roads keep to the ridgelines where they can, while tracks drop down the slopes toward streams in the valleys below.
As in much of rural Burundi, people traditionally live spread across their hillsides rather than in tight villages, with each homestead set among its banana plants and fields. On a map this creates a scattered, even texture of paths and clearings across the whole landscape, with small centres where roads meet giving the area its points of focus.
