'Ākra Map Poster & Print
'Ākra, also written Akre or Aqrah, lies in the mountains of northern Iraq. From above it is one of the most distinctive towns in the region: houses rise in tight rows up a steep slope, and the streets follow the contours rather than any grid. Below, the newer town spreads across flatter ground, and the mountain behind closes the view like a wall.
The old quarter's terraced houses, climbing one above another, give the town its reputation as one of the most picturesque in Kurdistan. 'Ākra is also known for its Newroz celebrations, when residents carry torches up the mountainside and light fires on the slopes to mark the spring new year. The event has become one of the best-known Newroz gatherings in the region.
An 'Ākra map poster is a map of slope and height as much as streets. The stepped lanes appear as fine, curving lines, the roads of the lower town as longer strokes, and the empty mountainside as open space. It suits anyone who knows the feeling of climbing through the old town, or who simply likes places shaped by terrain.

Mountain backdrop
The steep slope behind the town remains largely empty on the map, a calm field that frames the dense old quarter and emphasises its vertical layout.
Lower town
Newer streets spread over the flatter ground below the old quarter, giving the composition a steadier, more open base beneath the hillside.

Pourquoi 'Ākra
Une carte qui a du sens
People from 'Ākra carry strong memories of its hillside lanes and spring fires, and many now live far away. A map of the town is a quiet way to hold on to that geography, especially the stepped streets that few other places resemble.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with Newroz and a year, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits a mountain town remembered by firelight. Prints come on matte paper, framed or unframed.
