Mearim River
The river curves past the town in a wide band. It gives the poster its strongest shape and connects Arari to the coast and the interior.

Arari Map Poster & Print
Arari is a town in the state of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, on the banks of the Mearim River as it nears the sea. It belongs to the Baixada Maranhense, a low, flat region of lakes, floodplains and seasonal wetlands. From above, the town's small grid of streets sits beside the broad, curving river, with open land spreading out on every side.
The Mearim is known for the pororoca, a tidal bore that at certain times of year pushes a wave upstream against the current, and Arari is one of the places where you can see it. The landscape changes with the seasons. Rains flood the lowlands, and when the water recedes it leaves a mosaic of lakes and grassland.
An Arari map poster shows a town shaped by its river, where the line of the Mearim matters as much as any street. It means a lot to families from the Baixada, and it is an unusual piece for anyone drawn to quiet river landscapes and the flat, watery geography of Brazil's northeast.

Floodplain lakes
Around the town, the Baixada Maranhense spreads out in low wetlands and seasonal lakes, which appear as soft, irregular shapes on the map.
Compact grid
The town itself is a small grid of streets near the riverbank. It stands out clearly against the open, largely unbuilt land around it.

Pourquoi Arari
Une carte qui a du sens
For people from Arari living in São Luís or further south, a map of the town recalls the river, the wet season and the streets of home. It is personal without being sentimental in its design.
