Ayapel sits on the shore of the Ciénaga de Ayapel, one of the large wetlands of the La Mojana region in Córdoba. From above, the town fills a compact patch of land beside the water. Its streets run in a short grid toward the shoreline, and the ciénaga spreads out beyond them as an irregular body of water with ragged, shifting edges.
The surrounding landscape belongs to the lowland basin of the San Jorge River, where water, marsh and pasture blend into one another. On a map this shows as a loose pattern of channels, inlets and low ground. The built-up area is modest, so the drawing of the lake and its margins gives the composition most of its character.
