The Waal floodplains
Between the river and the dike lie wide meadows and water bodies that flood in high water. On the map they form a broad, open band along the northern edge.

Beuningen Map Poster & Print
Beuningen is a municipality of several villages lying just west of Nijmegen, in the Land van Maas en Waal. The river Waal defines its northern edge. On the map it is a broad band of water edged by floodplains, meadows and old clay pits, with the main dike running beside it and marking the line between river land and village land.
Behind the dike the villages spread across low, flat countryside that is known for fruit growing. Orchards and farmland fill the gaps between built-up areas, and long straight roads connect one village to the next. At the eastern end the Maas-Waal Canal meets the Waal. It is a rigid, man-made line that contrasts sharply with the river's broad curves.
A Beuningen map poster is as much a portrait of the river landscape as of the villages themselves. The streets form tidy clusters, the dike runs like a long thread, and the Waal gives the top of the composition a strong horizontal. It is typical of the Dutch rivers region, where towns have always had to make room for the water.

Maas-Waal Canal
The canal's straight course meets the Waal at the eastern end of the municipality. It is a crisp engineered line set against the river's natural sweep.
Village clusters
Beuningen and its neighbouring villages appear as separate knots of streets in open farmland, each with its own compact centre and a scatter of outlying farms.
