River terrace
Houses, orchards and fields cluster on the level ground beside the river, giving the town its elongated outline that follows the water down the valley.

La carte
Buni Map Poster & Print
Buni lies in the Chitral valley in the far north of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and its shape on the map comes straight from the mountains around it. Settlement follows a strip of flatter land beside the river, so the town is long and thin, with the main road running parallel to the water and fields filling the terrace between them.
The town is the administrative centre of Upper Chitral District, set among some of the highest ranges of the Hindu Kush. Beyond the valley floor the map empties quickly. Contours steepen, tracks become rare, and the few lines that remain lead up side valleys toward villages higher in the mountains.
A Buni map poster is mostly about the relationship between a river, one road and a narrow band of habitation. It is a spare composition, and that restraint suits black ink on white paper. It shows how people have made room for themselves in a landscape that leaves very little flat ground.

Valley road
A single main road threads the length of the settlement alongside the river. It is the backbone of the map and the town's link to the rest of Chitral.
Mountain emptiness
Away from the valley floor the sheet opens into wide blank space where the mountains rise, a strong contrast to the narrow line of settlement below.

Pourquoi Buni
Une carte qui a du sens
For anyone who has driven the Chitral road or has family in Upper Chitral, this map shows the valley as it is actually lived: a thread of homes and fields held between the river and the mountains. It is a calm, spare image for a wall.
