History also shaped the plan. During the Ragamuffin War of the 1830s and 1840s, Caçapava served for a time as capital of the Riograndense Republic, and the eighteenth-century Forte Dom Pedro II, a Portuguese stone fortification, still stands on the edge of town as one of its best-known landmarks.
