The Matla River
The river runs past Canning in a wide, tidal band. Its bends and mudflats give the map a powerful natural feature that dominates one side of the composition.

Canning Map Poster & Print
Canning lies on the Matla River in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, where the farmland south of Kolkata begins to give way to the tidal channels of the Sundarbans. On a map, the town sits beside a wide, winding river, with embankments along its banks and a street network that thins quickly into fields and fish ponds.
The town is named after Lord Canning, Governor-General of India, and was developed in the nineteenth century as Port Canning, planned as an alternative port to Kolkata. That port never flourished, partly because of the shifting river, but Canning remains a railway terminus and a gateway for travellers heading into the Sundarbans.
A Canning map poster captures a place between land and water. The Matla's broad curve, the grid of the town and the maze of channels and ponds beyond make a detailed, layered composition. It suits people from the town and anyone who has set out from here into the delta.

Railway terminus
The rail line from Kolkata ends at Canning. On the map, the tracks arrive in a straight line and stop close to the river, marking the town's role as a gateway.
Delta landscape
Beyond the town, fish ponds, fields and small channels form a patchwork. On the poster they create fine, irregular detail that hints at the Sundarbans ahead.
