Chieti sits on a long, narrow ridge in Abruzzo, and the map shows this clearly. The historic centre runs along the top of the hill like a spine, with short side streets dropping away on both flanks. Below, the newer district of Chieti Scalo spreads across the flat floor of the Pescara river valley, which gives the city two very different textures on one sheet.
The city is one of the oldest in central Italy. As Teate it was the main town of the Marrucini, and later it became a Roman municipium. Remains of Roman temples and baths still sit within the upper town. On a map, the tightly packed blocks of the ridge contrast with the looser, more regular streets that grew in the valley during the twentieth century.
A Chieti map poster captures the relationship between hill and plain. Winding roads climb the slopes to link the two levels. The river and the motorway run through the valley towards the Adriatic, which lies only a short distance to the east.
