Ely Map Poster & Print
Ely stands on what was once an island of higher ground in the Cambridgeshire Fens, surrounded by marsh until the land was drained in the seventeenth century. The name Isle of Ely still reflects that past. Above everything rises the cathedral with its octagonal lantern tower. It can be seen for miles across the flat landscape and has long been known as the Ship of the Fens.
On a map, the historic centre gathers around the cathedral precinct, with a compact market area and narrow streets sloping down to the River Great Ouse on the east side of town. The river, with its moorings and waterside paths, forms a gentle curve against the newer residential areas that spread outward. Railway lines converge south of the centre, making Ely a notable junction.
Oliver Cromwell lived here for about a decade, and his house near the cathedral is now open to visitors. An Ely map poster brings the small city's structure into focus: the great open space of the cathedral grounds, the curve of the river, the lanes in between and the straight drainage lines of the Fens stretching beyond.

River Great Ouse
The river curves along the eastern edge of Ely, lined with moorings and riverside paths, and draws a soft boundary between town and fen.
Fenland drains
Beyond the city, straight drainage channels and roads cut across the reclaimed land. Their ruler-drawn lines show how the Fens were engineered.
