Emmen Map Poster & Print
Emmen lies in the southeast of Drenthe, near the German border. The town centre is compact, and larger residential districts from the second half of the twentieth century spread around it, with curving streets and generous green space. The Emmerdennen woods border the centre closely, which gives the map a large area of forest right next to the shops.
Scattered through the woods and heathland around Emmen are hunebedden, the megalithic dolmens built by Neolithic farmers some five thousand years ago. Drenthe has more of them than any other Dutch province, and several stand within easy reach of the town. To the east lies the landscape of the former peat colonies, cut through by long, dead-straight canals and roads.
The town's zoo, Wildlands, attracts visitors from across the Netherlands and Germany. An Emmen map poster shows the planned residential districts, the woods, and the ruler-straight lines of the peat country around them. It is a surprisingly graphic mix of shapes.

Peat colony canals
To the east, the old peat-digging landscape is ruled with long straight canals and roads, laid out in a strict parallel pattern.
Garden-city districts
Postwar residential areas spread in curving streets and green courts, making an organic pattern that contrasts with the straight lines of the countryside.

Pourquoi Emmen
Une carte qui a du sens
Emmen suits people from Drenthe, families who have walked among the hunebedden, and anyone with a soft spot for the northern Netherlands. The contrast between the woods and the straight canals gives the print real structure.
You can edit the title, subtitle and coordinates, in Dutch or English, to add a name or date. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
