Meenachil River
The river winds through and around Kottayam before heading west to the lake. Its loops give the map its strongest natural lines.

Kottayam Map Poster & Print
Kottayam sits in central Kerala, between the Western Ghats to the east and the backwaters to the west. The Meenachil River loops through the area, and to the west a network of canals and waterways leads toward Vembanad Lake. The street pattern is loose and organic, with roads following the gentle rises of the land and houses spread among trees and plantations.
Kottayam is known as the city of letters. It is closely tied to printing, publishing and newspapers in Malayalam, and it was the first town in India to reach full literacy. CMS College, founded in the early nineteenth century, is one of the oldest colleges in the country. The town is also a centre of the rubber trade, and the Rubber Board has its headquarters here.
A Kottayam map poster captures the soft, flowing shape of a Kerala town. There is no strict grid, only curving roads, winding rivers and the start of the backwater channels toward the west. It creates a poster with a natural, almost hand-drawn feel, very different from the straight lines of planned cities.

Backwater channels
West of town, canals and waterways branch toward Vembanad Lake. On the poster they form a fine network of water between small patches of land.
Winding roads
Instead of a grid, Kottayam's streets curve over low hills and between plantations. The result is a loose, flowing pattern across the whole map.
