Macomia is a district seat in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique's northernmost province. It lies inland from the Indian Ocean on the main road that runs north through the region. On a map the town is long and linear. Buildings and lanes gather along the highway, and a looser pattern of paths and plots spreads out on either side.
Beyond the town the land is largely rural, a mix of farmland, woodland and scattered villages. The district reaches east to the coast and includes part of Quirimbas National Park, which protects coastal forest, islands and marine habitat.
