Malambo sits on the low Caribbean plain of Atlántico, just south of Soledad and Barranquilla, where the ground barely rises above the level of the Magdalena River. On a map the town reads as a tight network of residential blocks laid out along a few main roads, with the river's broad channel and its low marshy margins forming the eastern edge of the municipality.
The name carries weight among archaeologists. Excavations here gave it to the Malambo tradition, one of the early ceramic cultures of northern Colombia, whose pottery points to long settlement along the lower Magdalena. Today the town belongs to the metropolitan area of Barranquilla, and its street pattern shows it: dense neighbourhoods that press against the neighbouring municipality and thin out toward open fields.
