Marthandam sits in Kanyakumari district at the southern tip of Tamil Nadu, close to the Kerala border. On a map it reads as a linear town. The main highway between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari runs straight through its centre, and most of the streets gather along it. Further out they thin into small roads that wander between houses, gardens and plantations.
The town is widely known for honey. Beekeeping has long been a local livelihood, and Marthandam honey is sold across the region. The rubber, coconut and cashew country around the town also leaves its mark on the map. Scattered lanes and rooftops take the place of a formal grid, so the settlement fades gradually into its surroundings rather than stopping at a clear edge.
