Nordhorn Map Poster & Print
Nordhorn is the district seat of Grafschaft Bentheim in Lower Saxony, just a few kilometres from the Dutch border. Its centre stands on land enclosed by branches of the Vechte river. On a map, the old town appears as an island, and water winds around and through the streets. Several canals meet here too, which is why Nordhorn likes to describe itself as a town of water.
For much of the twentieth century Nordhorn was a major textile town, home to large mills whose sites have since been redeveloped. North of the centre lies the Vechtesee, a lake that is now a popular green space. The Nordhorn zoo is well known across the region. Residential districts spread outward on flat ground, their streets curving in the style of post-war suburbs.
