Periyakulam lies in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district, at the foot of the hills that rise toward Kodaikanal. On the map, the town is a dense, irregular cluster of streets in the plain, with the dark mass of the Western Ghats beginning just beyond its western and northern edges.
A small river passes through the town, and its course helps shape the older streets that grew up along it. The name Periyakulam is usually explained as big tank, a reference to the water reservoirs that are common across this part of South India.
