La carte
Ponmana Map Poster & Print
Ponmana lies on the coast of Kollam district in southern Kerala, on a thin strip of land between the Arabian Sea and the inland waters that run parallel to it. On the map, the shape is defined by water: a long, nearly straight shoreline to the west and a canal and backwater system to the east, with scattered houses and lanes in between.
The sands of this coast are rich in heavy minerals such as ilmenite and monazite, and the area around Chavara and Ponmana is known for mineral sand mining. That activity has changed the shape of the shore and the land over the years, and it is a well-known subject of local debate about coastal erosion.
A Ponmana map poster shows a place defined by the meeting of sea and backwater. In monochrome, the long coastline and the parallel water channel make a striking pair of lines, with the narrow settlement held between them.

Mineral sand coast
The land between sea and backwater is known for heavy mineral sands, and mining has shaped the coastal strip and its outline over time.
