Rengasdengklok Map Poster & Print
Rengasdengklok lies in Karawang Regency on the northern plains of West Java, close to the Citarum, the largest river in the province. From above, the town is a compact cluster of lanes and houses. Around it spread wide rice fields, irrigation channels and small villages, in a landscape that has made Karawang one of Java's most important rice-growing areas.
The town holds a notable place in Indonesian history. On 16 August 1945, young independence activists brought Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta here from Jakarta to press them to declare independence without delay. The proclamation was made in Jakarta the next day, and the house where the two leaders stayed is still remembered as part of that episode.
On paper the setting reads very clearly. A Rengasdengklok map poster shows the river curving past the town, the straight lines of canals and roads crossing the plain, and the denser knot of streets at the centre. It is the quiet rural geography behind one of the key moments in the nation's story.
