Compact centre
The town's streets form a dense, fairly regular pattern, which prints as a well-defined shape at the centre of the poster against the open countryside.

Runan Map Poster & Print
Runan lies in Zhumadian prefecture in southern Henan, on the broad, level plain between the Yellow River and the Huai. The name refers to its position south of the Ru River, and the area has been an administrative centre for a very long time, lending its name to a historical commandery. From above, the town is a compact street pattern set in open farmland.
The flatness of the land shapes everything on the map. Roads run in long, straight lines toward neighbouring towns, field boundaries form an almost regular pattern, and waterways and ponds break the grid here and there. The town's edge is clear, and the density of the streets inside it contrasts sharply with the calm of the plain around it.
A Runan map poster presents that contrast cleanly, with a dark, detailed centre and a soft, even surround. For people from the area, it captures a hometown in the heart of one of China's major farming regions, and for others it is simply an elegant study of how a plain town is organised.

River setting
Rivers and drainage channels cross the plain around Runan, including the Ru that gave the town its name, adding thin flowing lines to the straight roads.
Straight plain roads
With little terrain to follow, roads run straight across the farmland toward neighbouring towns, giving the composition a clear, geometric framework.
