La carte
Soran Map Poster & Print
Soran lies in the northeast of Erbil Governorate, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, where the land folds into high, steep mountains. The town, which includes the older settlement of Diana, stretches along a valley floor. Its streets form a long, narrow band that follows the contours instead of a compact grid, and empty, rugged slopes frame the map on several sides.
It sits on the Hamilton Road, built through the mountains in the late 1920s and early 1930s to link Erbil with the Iranian border. It is also close to the Rawanduz gorge, one of the most dramatic canyons in the region. Soran is home to a university, and newer neighbourhoods climb gradually up the lower hillsides.
A Soran map poster shows a town defined by its terrain: the main road running the length of the valley, side streets branching up the slopes, and the sudden stop where the mountains take over. The effect is spare and dramatic, with open space doing as much work as the streets.

Hamilton Road
The historic mountain road from Erbil toward Iran passes through the area. It is a key line on the map and explains where the town sits and how it grew.
Rawanduz gorge
Nearby, the land drops into a deep, winding canyon, where road and river squeeze through the mountains in tight, dramatic curves.
