Swarzędz lies just east of Poznań, close enough that its streets almost merge with the city's outer districts. On a map, the town gathers around a small historic market square, with a tighter pattern of older streets giving way to housing estates and industrial blocks. The Cybina river and the long, narrow Swarzędz Lake form a green and blue edge along its western side.
For much of the twentieth century the name Swarzędz was almost a synonym for furniture in Poland, thanks to the workshops and factories that grew up here. That industrial history still shows in the large rectangular plots near the railway, which runs east from Poznań toward Warsaw and cuts a clean, straight line through the town.
