Veendam Map Poster & Print
Veendam grew out of the peat colonies of the northern Netherlands, and its map still tells that story. Instead of a compact medieval core, the town stretches along straight waterways and the roads that follow them. Houses line both sides in long ribbons, with newer neighbourhoods filling in between, while the surrounding polder is laid out in narrow, strictly parallel plots.
After the peat was dug, the canals that carried it became the backbone of local life, and Veendam developed a notable shipping trade in the nineteenth century. That maritime link is remembered in the name of a Holland America Line ship, the Veendam. Today the town is a regional centre in eastern Groningen, surrounded by the region's farmland.
A Veendam map poster shows how human work shaped an entire landscape: straight canals, long linear streets and a field pattern so regular it looks ruled with a pencil. It appeals to people from the Veenkoloniën and to anyone who enjoys the geometry of Dutch reclaimed land, where every line on the map has a practical origin.

Ruled field pattern
Beyond the built area, narrow parcels run in parallel lines, giving the map edges a fine, striped texture that is almost abstract.
Infill neighbourhoods
Twentieth-century housing fills the space between the old ribbons with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, softening the strict geometry of the canal lines.
