Vilappil lies a short distance from Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, in the gently rolling country that rises inland from the coast. It is not a city in the compact sense but a spread of settlement. Houses are strung along roads and lanes rather than packed into blocks, and the map shows that looser, organic pattern.
From above, the road network looks almost hand-drawn. Lanes follow ridges and the edges of low valleys, branching and rejoining as they go, while small ponds and cultivated lowlands appear as gaps between them. Generations of smallholdings shaped this landscape, and its geometry comes from the land itself rather than from any single plan.
