Washington lies in the far south-west of Utah, immediately east of St. George. The two cities have grown into one continuous urban area. The Virgin River runs along the south side of town, and the map shows neighbourhoods spreading from the river flats toward the hills. Curving subdivisions and golf courses sit alongside older, more regular streets in the historic centre.
The city was settled in the 1850s by Latter-day Saint pioneers sent to grow cotton in the warm climate of what became known as Utah's Dixie. The old cotton factory building still stands in the town. Irrigated farmland once filled the lower land along the river, and parts of the Washington Fields remain open today.
A Washington map poster also shows its dramatic setting. Red sandstone cliffs and dark volcanic ridges rise to the north, and Interstate 15 runs through on its way between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The desert beyond the last streets fills the edges of the print with open, textured ground.

Pioneers came here in the 1850s to grow cotton, and the historic cotton factory building remains a landmark from that early settlement.
