Yangtze curve
The river is the dominant feature of the map. Its broad band of water sweeps past the town and sets the orientation of the whole composition.

La carte
Zhijiang Map Poster & Print
Zhijiang lies on the Yangtze in western Hubei, downstream from Yichang, where the river leaves the mountains of the Three Gorges and slows into open country. From above, the town follows the riverbank. It has a compact centre and a band of streets parallel to the water, with farmland spreading across the flat ground beyond.
Zhijiang is a county-level city under the administration of Yichang. Its name, often translated as branching river, is usually explained by the way the Yangtze divides in this stretch, flowing around islands and sandbars. The surrounding plain is fertile and closely farmed. The river has long made the area a place of passage between the uplands to the west and central China.
A Zhijiang map poster is above all a portrait of a river. The broad curve of the Yangtze, its islands and the embankments along it take up much of the composition. The town gathers beside them in a neat block of streets. The contrast between wide water and fine urban lines suits a minimal style.

River islands
Sandbars and islands split the channel in this stretch. They create the branching shapes behind the city's name and add graphic detail to the water.
Plain beyond
Away from the river, farmland and village roads spread across flat ground. Their fine, regular texture frames the denser town centre.
