Shikarpur lies on the flat plain of upper Sindh, west of the Indus and not far from Sukkur. On the map the old town shows as a dense, irregular core, its lanes too tight and winding to follow any grid, surrounded by newer streets that spread out along the main roads. Irrigation canals cross the surrounding land in long, straight strokes.
For centuries Shikarpur was a trading and banking town on the routes toward Kandahar and Central Asia, sometimes described as a gateway to Khorasan. Its merchants built financial networks that reached far beyond Sindh, and carved wooden havelis from that period still stand in the old quarter. The covered Shahi Bazaar, running through the centre, remains the best-known part of the town.
