Tequila lies in western Jalisco, northwest of Guadalajara, between the Tequila Volcano to the south and the deep gorge of the Río Grande de Santiago to the north. The town's compact grid centres on its main plaza and parish church, with streets that tilt slightly as the ground slopes.
The town gave its name to the drink, and the countryside shows it. Fields of blue agave cover the surrounding hills in regular rows, a landscape inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. Distilleries sit close to the historic centre, and Tequila has been designated a Pueblo Mágico.
