Obuase, also written Obuasi, lies in the south of Ghana's Ashanti Region, surrounded by rolling, forested hills. On a map the town's streets follow the terrain rather than a grid, curving around ridges and valleys. Neighbourhoods are spread across the slopes, and the mining areas occupy large, distinct parts of the landscape.
The town grew around gold mining, which began here on an industrial scale in the late nineteenth century and continues today. The Obuasi mine is one of the best-known gold mines in West Africa, and its infrastructure shapes the map, with access roads, the railway and processing areas woven through the town.
Beyond the town, farmland and forest cover the hills, and small settlements are scattered along the roads towards Kumasi and the south.
